Construction has started at Westfield Kotara on a redevelopment that will see the shopping centre expand by more than 120 speciality stores including a new Target store.

The redevelopment will take around 18 months to complete and generate approximately 400 jobs during construction, creating a significant employment boost for the Newcastle region.

The project will increase Westfield Kotaras gross lettable area by almost a third with the addition of 21,000 square metres of retail space and is expected to be completed in November 2007.

The $160 million project will have the 6,300 sqm new Target, and a second larger food court located on the upper level with 13 food outlets, an outdoor dining area and 650 seats.

Greg Miles, Westfields Director of Development said, The completed centre will be the premier retail destination in this city, undergoing a major refurbishment that will create a modern shopping centre with a broad range of retail.

The project incorporates feedback from the local community and will maintain the convenience and accessibility that makes the centre so appealing to shoppers.

The new development will be opened in two stages. Stage one, scheduled for July 2007 includes the opening of approximately 35 specialty stores and a second food court. Stage two is planned for the end of 2007 with the opening of Target and approximately 70 retailers.

New car parking will be added including a new multi-deck car park on Hudson Street and an additional car park will be included above Level 2 retail. On completion the total car spaces will be in excess of 2,900 spaces.
