Westfield receives outline planning consent for Guildford in the UK

Guildford Borough Councils planning committee has granted outline planning permission for Westfields application for a 140 million redevelopment of the Friary shopping centre in Guildford, 40 kilometres southwest of London.

The redevelopment will increase the size of the centre from 14,000 square metres to 43,000 square metres and involve the addition of approximately 60 new specialty and food court stores. The proposed redevelopment includes a new bus station and up to 170 residential apartments.

Westfield Managing Director Steven Lowy said he was delighted to receive the outline planning consent which, in line with normal practice, will now be referred to the UK Secretary of State recommending that planning permission be granted.

The Friary Shopping Centre is owned by the Wilmslow Partnership, a joint venture between Westfield Holdings Limited (50%) and Hermes Property Asset Management (50%) on behalf on the British Telecommunications Pension Scheme.

Westfields UK portfolio includes interests in seven shopping centres including the Friary. The others are Castlecourt in Belfast, Mill Gate in Bury, Broadmarsh in Nottingham, The Eagle Centre in Derby, The Brunel Centre at Swindon and Royal Victoria Place at Tunbridge Wells.\n\n
